The state and federal governments have damaged the growing solar energy sector with their indecisive moves in relation to the carbon debate and the feed in tarrifs.

This week the Barnett government pulled the plug on the renewable energy grid subsidy scheme. This was after the $127 million installation quota for solar panels was reached.

The solar tariff was originally set at 60 cents per kilowatt hour and now it has been moved down to 7 cents per kilowatt hour.

The incentive needs to be recalibrated. All the profits from Synergy could be used to fund alternative energy schemes.

Australia produces more greenhouse gases per person than any other country in the world. In Victoria our reliance on brown coal means we are the worst greenhouse gas polluters in Australia. For a first world nation, this fact is a national disgrace. Our mindset impacts that of others. We should set a national goal that matchs the Scientific America suggestion that we can convert all global energy infrastructure by 2030 if we put our minds to it.

On investigation, uranium mining is sensless for the following reasons -

• Environmental degradation on removal of the material from the earth including damaged ecosystems & carbon fuels required for the mining process
• Environmental degradation on attemting to dispose of the material
• Cost of building the reactors
• Cost of transporting & processing the material into fuel
• Possibility of weapons conversion

Rapid growth in Western Australia has all but assured us of the development of three new coal powered electricity generating stations within the next few years.

With energy shortages of 200MW forecast by the summer of 2011-12, the state liberal government has given the green light to Verve to refurbish the 40 year old Muja A & B generators. Aviva has also been given the go ahead to build a new coal powered station at Eneabba. These three stations are expected to generate 7.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Given our abundance of renewable energy sources in this state, this decision by the state liberal government is short sighted to say the least.

That bastion of scientific fact, Scientific America, recently published a feature article that pointed out that the world could generate almost 100% of its energy from renewable sources with current technologies and the right political will.
