Change or die

With the Copenhagen summit on climate change less than three months away, and governments the world over engaged in intensive discussions and preparations, it feels like we are finally standing at a true crossroads.

One direction leads to a vision of a sustainable future, with adequate energy, food, and water for all without compromising the welfare of future generations.

The other direction is a continuation of the path we're currently on, which the vast preponderance of empirical evidence says is not sustainable, but which continues to be vigorously defended by vested interests.

Nanosolar delivers energy below 10c/Kw/Hr

A new solar panel designed & manufactured by Nanosolar is coming to market! These high output solar panels will be able to produce energy at a cost of about 5 - 6 c/KW/H, which is almost as cheap as energy from fossil fuel plants.

Once solar enegy prices cross this important inflection point, prepare for radical changes in the energy market place. Radical changes can be significantly disruptive at multiple levels. Consider for instance, that low cost solar creates new options for vehicle travel and lowers the threshhold for decentralised power production.

Eco Bounty

What an interesting term! Eco Bounty is used to refer to brands that engage in the epic quest for a sustainable society.

Engaging in sustainability that creates 'Eco Bounty'can be profitable for enterprise for a number of reasons -

  • Sustainability is all about cutting out unnecessary inputs
  • Early adopters that make the effort to meet or exceed stringent environmental guidelines are more likely to come up with innovative ideas and designs giving them an edge on the competition
  • Increasingly, the public are going 'green' and will support corporations that reflect their new environmental ethic
  • Radical new technological advancements create significant opportunity for new products and services that are essentially green

Recognise this 'big shift' and position your business to take advantage of a new paradigm.

Accounting & reporting costs to fall rapidly

A new machine language is going to rapidly reshape the business reporting environment leading to big falls in the cost of accounting & regulatory reporting services. The language is going to be shared by humans & machines for talking about financial transactions - that language is XBRL.

Currently, Treasury & the ATO are working alongside accounting application developers to enable accounting applications with a new form of reporting based on XBRL called Simplified Business Reporting (SBR) . All other government agencies are also restructuring their forms along a common Australian taxonomy that conforms to the international XBRL reporting taxonomy.

This new XML type language gets its power from its ability to carry coherent communication between different accounting and reporting applications without those applications every being able to communicate otherwise except by developiong tedious mapping rules for each individual information transformation. Additionally the information can carry self validating rules to test its own truth within relationships i.e assets less liabilities = shareholders funds.

We are one step closer to a world that is virtually free.

Geothermal to power new Pilbara city

A stretch of land between Onslow and Carnarvon holds significant geothermal power potential and Perth company New World Energy has been named winner applicant for nine permits in that hot spot.

It will be steam power from this region that is likely to contribute significantly to the future energy needs of the region. The energy is essentially free of greenhouse gas emissions. Given the amount of activity expected in the Pilbara over the coming decades, the demand for energy in the region is expected to exceed 1500MW. Much of this demand will be generated by the massive LNG plants such as Woodside's Pluto project.

Intelligent cities coming to Western Australia

Smart cities of the future are being built now. South Korea's Songdo and China's Meixi Lake exemplify the design features that will distinguish our Western Australian cities of the future. These new cities are nearing completion in what are multibillion dollar builds that incorporate intelligent infrastructure and eco vibes.

Songdo is a modern mega structure marvel built on what was once an expanse of mudflats.  Presently this new city that lies fifty kilometres south west of Seoul is forty percent complete. It is now dotted with more than one hundred high rise buildings including a 7,800-person apartment complex, a massive convention centre and a Sheraton hotel. Completion date for the city is set for 2014 with a final price tag of 35 billion US dollars making it the largest private real estate project in history.

Backers of the Songdo project include Morgan Stanley, Gale & the Korean steel maker Posco. All are betting that the city will become a trading hub linking Tokyo & Shanghai.

The city will conform to the U.S. Green Building Council's energy-efficient L.E.E.D standards; all buildings are incorporating special window glazing and ventilated double facades. Grey water and rain will be collected for irrigation and use in cooling towers. A network of underground pneumatic pipes will move solid waste, reducing the need for garbage trucks.

From a transportation perspective the city is already offering car sharing, water taxis, bike rentals and buses powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

An amazing 40% of the city space is allocated to greenery & vegetation including parklands & play areas.

Data networks developed & deployed by Cisco link every facet of the city including schools, stadiums, municipalities and the utility grid.

Cisco views Songdo as a model it can replicate around the world. It plans to build a global centre for "intelligent urbanization" and the replicate the solution in new cities as they are built.

We can certainly expect many of these intelligent city themes to find their way into new cities built in Western Australia.

The purpose of the group “Crusaders for Western Australia”

The purpose of the group “Crusaders for Western Australia” is to promote the adoption of Western Australian devised and developed world class innovations, Often these are already finding ready acceptance and take-up over East and overseas but are struggling to penetrate their home market.

Too often the aspect of "a prophet is not known in their own land" is a defining feature of new products trying to break into the Western Australian market. If they come from over East or overseas they must be good, if they are home grown they can't be good enough.

This reality frequently forces WA companies to take their innovations elsewhere, often with financial incentives of other governments and private funders.

At last year's "Leading Lights" innovations conference held in Perth speaker after speaker basically said "if you've a good idea then get out of town."

I have personally been challenged by this concept and have taken on something of a "crusade" to ensure local support and market acceptance here in WA for locally devised and developed products and services.

“Crusaders for Western Australia” is providing a focus to connect like-minded people, those that are determined to see the creative environment so evident here is our own State is supported, encouraged and flourishes here "at home" as well as elsewhere.
