MAGLEV wind turbine for WA

Magnetic levitation is an extremely efficient system for wind energy. Here’s how it works: the vertically oriented blades of the wind turbine are suspended in the air above the base of the machine, replacing the need for ball bearings. The turbine uses “full-permanent” magnets, not electromagnets — therefore, it does not require electricty to run. The full-permanent magnet system employs neodymium (”rare earth”) magnets and there is no energy loss through friction. This also helps reduce maintenance costs and increases the lifespan of the generator. Read on about MAGLEV technology

Pilbara city on the horizon

There is a growing groundswell of support for a major population centre in the Pilbara. The Pilbara city would provide the infrastructure and facilities to support the people needed in the mining industry in the area.

Sam Walsh, CEO of Rio Tinto has fallen in line behind the idea. He said "In regions, such as the Pilbara & the Kimberley, we need to put our cards on the table and place a long term bet on the development of major communities".

Algae farms for deserts of Western Australia

Algae farms that can convert CO2 (Greenhouse gas) into oil takes lots of space & sunlight making it highly probable that the vast expanses of Western Australia could be turned into algae oil farms.

"Making algae make oil is not hard," Venter said. "It's the scalability that's the problem." Algae farms of the size required for organisms to become efficient and realistic sources of energy are expensive. Still, algae has the advantage that it uses CO2 as a carbon source — it actually consumes and metabolizes a greenhouse gas — and uses sunlight as an energy source. So what we have here, potentially, are living solar cells that eat carbon dioxide as they produce new hydrocarbons for fuel.
